hello everyone, name is mega and i'm a relatively experienced user of blender ( for as far as it goes :-) )
i'm in charge of making models for several Gmod addons including SBEP
so, why did i make this thread?
wel, because i see allot of people use 3ds max, but there are quite some people that want to learn modeling but dont want to spend money on it.
for those people, i made this thread.
so first of all, what do you need?
these are some of the basic requirements for using blender.
1. the microsoft .NET 2.0 framework.
2. latest version of the python code lib's
3. the ability to think in more then 1 dimension.
so, how do you get blender you ask? simple!.
go to www.blender.org and download it.
just make sure you download the .net framework and python first, wil save you a major headache later
now, you got blender installed and you start it up for the first time.
and i think i know what you wil be thinking... : WTF?! what is this UI? how am i ever going to use this?
wel, the awnser to that is : learn.
might sound a bit harsh, but everybody has to learn to do something.
don't think you wil be able to make complete, textured, collisioned and compiled models in 24 hours, cause you wont.
best way to start getting used to blender is by reading this : http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Blender_3D:_Noob_to_Pro#Table_of_Contents
one of the best, and most direct wikibooks on blender there is.
another trick, spawn a cube. you can do this by going to the top menu, click add, then scroll to mesh, and then cube.
now, see that little bar called object mode? click it and select edit mode after you right click on the cube to select it.
now you wil see 8 pink dots on your screen, these are called vertices. every model is made up out of vertices.
the 6 side's of the cube are called faces, and are used to fill up the model, and is what is going to hold your texture in the end.
now, if you press B you can make a box selection of verts.
i suggest you select the top 4 verts, and press E.
this stands for extrude, and wil allow you to, for instance, make a single cube into 2 cubes.
you can move verts with the XYZ arrow's on the screen, just left click, hold and drag.
start experimenting, and while doing so. read the wikibook.
hope this little tut on blender helped a bit, and has inspired some of you to start modeling youself.
( p.s. lack of capitals, proper grammar and punctuation are due to lack of sleep. it's 2:22 am when i'm writing this... )
good luck and i hope to see some creations with blender soon!
( p.p.s. i did this with a stock BMW that i got from the webz, was too lazy to make a BMW myself...
)
